ANWB Roadside Assistance modernises planning with a smart cloud solution

| minute read

For decades, ANWB Roadside Assistance has been a trusted presence on Dutch roads. Every day, more than four hundred roadside patrol officers stand ready to help motorists get back on their way quickly after a breakdown. It’s quite an operation — on average, ANWB’s breakdown service responds to 3,700 incidents a day. To keep this running smoothly, efficient and reliable planning is essential. The organisation therefore uses an application to schedule its roadside patrol staff.

Until recently, this planning application ran in an external environment that was soon to be decommissioned. To safeguard the continuity of its roadside services, ANWB decided to migrate this critical application to the cloud, choosing a future-proof, secure and reliable solution.

Assessment

Sopra Steria was brought in to manage the migration. Rather than carrying out a purely technical transition, Sopra Steria began with a thorough assessment to identify key dependencies and risks. Alex van Koutrik, Director of Cloud Platform Services at Sopra Steria Benelux, says: “An assessment like this gives you insight into potential risks and dependencies, helping to prevent unnecessary issues during execution. It also provides clarity about the different scenarios you can follow, including the feasibility of the project timeline. For example, the assessment showed that the initial delivery date was simply not achievable. An agile approach, combined with a realistic schedule, resulted in a reliable plan - with parts of the solution demonstrated and tested every three weeks wherever possible.”

Modernisation as an opportunity

The cloud migration was immediately used as an opportunity to modernise parts of the application by leveraging AWS Cloud services. For instance, the database is now fully managed automatically.
Integrations with critical systems were also improved, including the mobile app that allows roadside patrol officers to view their schedules directly on their phones.

The migration was carried out in three-week sprints. After each sprint, a demo was held to review progress and make adjustments where necessary.
Thanks to the close collaboration between ANWB and Sopra Steria, the migration proceeded smoothly and was successfully completed.

For us, this was more than just a migration. We optimised the app by integrating systems and, of course, the cloud - always with user-friendliness front and centre.

Greater control over operations

The new cloud environment has made ANWB’s planning application future ready. The organisation now benefits from a modern and dependable solution with improved availability and performance, perfectly aligned with the day-to-day work of planners and roadside patrol officers. Sopra Steria is responsible for maintaining both the application and its supporting infrastructure.

Roel Petter adds: “The planning is now up to date and accessible to everyone. That gives the team peace of mind and greater control over operations. Planners can log in at any time to create schedules that match the availability and preferences of the patrol officers. For the roadside patrols themselves, it means they can fully focus on their core task: helping motorists quickly and safely get back on the road.”

The planning is now up to date and accessible to everyone. That gives the team peace of mind and greater control over operations.
