The new version of the Belgian eID document won the prize for 'the best regional identity document' at the High Security Printing conference in LisbonThis award is a recognition of the best security document, the best system infrastructure and the best implementation of an official passport, identity card or other type of security passport.

The renovated eID card, which was introduced in January 2020, includes several upgrades that have earned it international recognition. Sopra Steria has been involved in the implementation of the client application that is deployed in all the municipalities and diplomatic posts.

According to Violaine Gasarasi, Project Manager at Sopra Steria, the main change of this application were the following:

  • Capturing all the necessary biometrics data such as picture and two fingerprints from each citizen during the procedure of requesting new card. These biometrics data are placed on the second contactless chip present on the new eID document.
  • The procedure of verification of biometric data when delivering card.

Sopra Steria has implemented the biometric data bases, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), treatment, the formatting and the exchange of biometric data with the Producer of the card and the Certification Authority.

All the implementation regarding biometric data is conform to ICAO standard, making then the Belgian eID document more secure.
